Student Worksessions:

April 23-24, 2008

Student work sessions were held at Lincoln Middle School on April 23rd and 24th.  During 45-minute increments, groups of 25-35 students participated in one or more of the following activities.  Documentation from these sessions can be found by clicking the following links:

Activity 1:  Best & Worst

Which 3 spaces are  YOUR MOST FAVORITE spaces in the school?

What do you like about them?

Which 3 are YOUR LEAST FAVORITE spaces in the school?

What would you change to make these spaces better?

Activity 2:  Traditions

Think about the important traditions and rituals of your school….

WHERE do they happen? Which spaces in the school?

Why is the space/room important?

Which traditions would you like to keep doing in the new school?

How could these traditions and rituals be supported in the new school?

What kind of spaces would they need?

Activity 3:  Before/After

Think of a space in your school where you spend a lot of time.  Describe the space - Is it comfortable? Is it bright? Is it loud?  Is it fun?  Is it boring?  Who else is there?  What else can you tell us about this space?

If you could make any kind of changes to this space, what would you change?  Why?

Activity 4:  Spaces in Your Day

Think about where you spend time every day…

Where do you go before school?  Why?

During the school day, how do you move from space to space?  Is it crowded? Comfortable? Fun? Scary? Loud?

What new spaces would you like to see in the new school? Why?

On-going Student Projects

Students were offered the opportunity to participate in several continuing projects to help with the planning and design process.  Sign-up sheets were available during all student sessions, and projects have healthy lists of student volunteers. Volunteer student projects are included below, and additional information will be posted as these groups get going.

Project 1:     Advice to the Architects

Even architects were kids at one time, attending middle school just like you.  But a lot has changed since we were in school, and we need your help to understand what middle school is like NOW.  What would you like us to know about you so we can design the IDEAL school for middle school students today and into the future?  Discuss and gather information, ideas and insights from your peers to share with the architects.  Prepare a presentation (drawings, video, powerpoint, etc.) of your findings for inclusion on the project website.

Project 2:     “Wonder Wall” of school design ideas

Create a place in your school to showcase ideas for the design of the new school.  Organize and display information gathered from a variety of sources such as cool ideas from students, parents, architects, contractors, etc.  Keep the wall updated throughout the school design process.

Project 3:     School Design Website

Work with BrainSpaces to develop and maintain an on-line resource for sharing and communicating student ideas, research, news, events, presentations, feedback, etc.
