Student work sessions were held at Lincoln Middle School on April 23rd and 24th. During 45-minute increments, groups of 25-35 students participated in drawing activities and discussions.
The following list summarizes and loosely categorizes student ideas and insights recorded during these two days. Duplications have been minimized.
LIKES, WANTS & IDEAS
GENERAL Bigger classrooms: space to move around, spread out, work on projects New computers and laptops Activity classrooms: languages, art, music (bigger than current), cooking, technology, science & math labs Art room bigger to display more artwork Home-ec room: cooking Photo shop Theater; auditorium/movie theater; student names on stage Better library: better books and computers Aquarium More trash cans Water coolers that work More locker space: double lockers, bigger lockers with automatic locks Cafeteria: indoor/outdoor eating area; food court; snack bar Greenhouse: roof garden Lots of windows; high ceilings; skylights; balcony; see-thru walls
PHYS ED & SPORTS Bigger gym; more active space; weight room; indoor sports room; pool Football stadium Tennis court Rock wall Bleachers Baseball; gymnastics; water polo; sand volleyball; track Showers in locker rooms
STUDENT AMMENITIES Nap room/student lounge/free room: place to socialize and hang out; vending & snacks Thinking room Culture room: flags, cultural displays Room of fame Stress room/relaxation room: couches and a place where students and teachers can discuss issues; include massage chairs, tv and vending, Outdoor skate park Go-cart track Wii room, arcade, game room "Fun" class
LOOK & FEEL More color: exciting Students "mark" on school, e.g. handprints Warrior pride colors Banners with school colors: self-directed, respectful Copper/Gold walls
MOST FAVORITE (and why) Art room: tables to sit and communicate; colorful; free time to do projects; get to be creative Gym: sports & competition; active/running; big space Lunch room: socialize with friends; food Music room: instruments and music Media center Fields
LEAST FAVORITE (and why) Small hallways; small lockers; small stage 6th grade in basement: can't see out Toilet rooms: smelly Reading room: needs comfy seats Too many stairs Locker rooms: small, smelly Cafeteria, health room and fitness room: too small
ADVICE TO ARCHITECTS Not so dark: more sunlight Better air quality – temp control "Green" More color (why? Too plain); murals Welcoming lobby Atrium to eat outside Two gyms: one for boys, one for girls Movie room/theater Indoor soccer field; swimming pool, track for on-site marathon Petting zoo Game room More classrooms, bigger classrooms Bigger art room "Warrior Quest" "Lock-In" Space for teams Reading room Food lab "Chill-out room" |
