6:05  – 6:45    Focus Group Summaries

Notes and diagrams from focus group activities from June 3rd & 12th were presented, along with the resulting adjustments to the space program.

6:45  – 7:45   Small Group Break-out Activities & Discussions

Participants self-selected groups based on the program components listed below.  Each group was given two sets of space program “puzzle” pieces along with a preliminary/proposed layout of the spaces within each component. The groups used the puzzle pieces to suggest changes to the preliminary layouts and to address the activity topics listed below.

                      Groups:

                      A         Teams

                      B         Exploratory

                      C         Reading/Library

                      D         Physical Education

ACTIVITY 1:  Identify potential shared spaces

                      -  Board can share the little theater

ACTIVITY 2:  Identify potential space reductions

                      -  if Board uses the little theater, then omit the boardroom

ACTIVITY 3:  Suggest programmatic adjacencies to support the above

                      -  the following diagrams were generated by participants:

7:45  – 8:00   Summary & Next Steps

general comments:

- current layouts are approximately 100,00 gross SF; needs to be 87,000 SF max

- main focus on student spaces for now; future break-out session for admin.

- outside areas not counted as SF for the building (planters, paving, landscaping options)

- outdoor reading area & dining area requested by staff and students

- discussions needed on size of library/media center

The next Planning Leadership Team session will be scheduled for mid-July.

ideas:

- running track around perimeter of gym

- health classroom adjacent to gym, locker rooms

- fitness/weight room on 2nd floor, but visible

- PE/Coach office shared

- male and female staff lockers within student locker rooms

- adjacent to access door to athletic fields, outdoor equipment storage

ideas: reading & library

- one central library/media center (rather than per pod)

- media center & reading room separated to avoid noise

- alcoves surround shared reading area

- concern that outdoor reading area wouldn’t be used during winter

- optional moveable walls in reading room: “nanawall,” collapsible accordion wall

ideas: exploratory

- theater/performance  and gym separate to avoid schedule, noise conflicts

- performance commons (little theater) connects performance platform/choir & dining commons

- retractable wall and reverse telescoping seating expands theater seating into dining commons (as shown in section diagram inset)

- community commons can extend cafeteria seating (+100 seats)

- music office between band/general music room for supervision

ideas: team pods

             (2 ideas shown)

- team pod consists of a cluster (or row ) of learning studios surrounding (or flanked by) project labs, a team living room, teacher center and support spaces (storage, restrooms)

- applied learning/project labs are flexible to serve as science lab, computer lab, etc

- one large learning studio per team, separated by moveable walls, to allow for large group activities

- team living room = hangout space + kitchenette

- teaching spaces separate from teacher center (office space)

- lockers and restrooms may be located inside or outside the team pod (TBD)
