Draft Guiding Principles are based on input gathered to date and reflect the SD81 Mission and Beliefs.  The role of these key Principles is to provide focused conversations and responsible decision-making throughout the planning and design process. Drafts will continue to be adjusted and refined with your input.  Please feel free to provide feedback and suggestions.

Draft Version 1.0

WELL-ROUNDED LEARNERS

Education is a matter of well-rounded growth, addressing and responding to the individual needs and abilities of the whole child. Intellectual, academic, emotional, social growth and physical fitness are key components of learning and development.

EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING

School is a place where children learn by doing.  All aspects of the school, including the physical environment, should stimulate curiosity, and inspire students to develop interests which will encourage further learning. The school will reflect the value of education and learning.

ACCOUNTABILITY

Students are guided with respect and kindness to become confident, contributing members of a democratic society where the welfare of all is considered and rights of the individual respected, where responsibility goes with freedom, and where there is respect for self, others and authority.  Adults will exercise  thoughtful leadership to ensure that student achievement is the intended result of all decisions.

COMMUNITY SCHOOL

The schools are an essential part of the community of Schiller Park. Our learning community includes parents, teachers, District leadership and community members. Members of the SD81 school community work together, share expertise, and collaborate to enhance learning opportunities for all and to establish and maintain the school as a center of community support, activity and pride.

STEWARDSHIP

Today’s students are tomorrow’s leaders. Cultivating cultural, community and environmental stewardship is a responsibility of the school. The school should reflect a commitment to living in harmony with our environment.

FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY

In the planning and design of the new Lincoln Middle School, District 81 must promote responsible use of designated funds both in the project construction costs and the continuing operational expenses of the new facility.  The new school should be thoughtfully designed to maximize efficiency while maintaining its effectiveness to support the other guiding principles.
