1:00 – 1:05 Purpose The purpose of the session is to discuss the needs of the core learning environments and to explore options for supporting these needs with physical spaces and the organization of these spaces. The 7th grade team of teachers were selected for this initial discussion to avoid issues of student transition found in both 6th and 8th graders. Transition issues are important, however, and specifics for each grade level will be addressed later in the planning process.
1:05 – 1:15 Guiding Principles A review of the Guiding Principles reminded participants that student achievement is the intended result of all decisions.
1:15 – 1:45 Space Program Summaries A space program, including the types, sizes and quantities of each space in the new school, was drafted based on all discussions to date. This preliminary program was discussed, and revisions were proposed.
1:45 – 2:15 Pod Organization Examples Download .pdf Examples of pod layouts from a variety of schools from throughout the country were shown using planning diagrams. While each of these examples represent solutions for other schools, the group used them to discuss their likes and dislikes for organizing rooms in a pod.
2:15 – 2:45 LMS Pod Organizational Strategies Participants used “puzzle” pieces to illustrate their ideas for pod organizational strategies that might work for Lincoln Middle School. These are included below:
2:45 – 3:00 Summary & Next Steps The space program will be revised based on today’s comments and suggestions. A pod layout will be drafted based on the strategies generated. The revised program and the draft pod layout will be presented to the Project Leadership Team and to the 6th and 8th grade team teachers for further discussion.
